THE EXPLORE NEPAL GROUP HAS RESTORED BUILDINGS IN KATHMANDU FOR ITS OWN USE:

An elegant old house in Kathmandu that was about to be demolished, has now instead been renovated and converted into a beautiful exclusive Nepalese restaurant, Bhojan Griha, meaning House of Food. The renovation and construction of the building was entirely undertaken with local materials and skills. Local artisans and craftmans were employed to maintain the traditionality of the building. One of the main aims of restoring this old building into Bhojan Griha was to put pressure on the government to introduce laws to protect old buildings in Nepal.

At Bhojan Griha whilst enjoying the traditional Nepali architecture and delicious organic Nepali food, guests can also enjoy local folk dances and songs that are performed live at the restaurant.

This eco-hotel in the heart of Kathmandu was built in the style of a typical Newari temple, using traditional architectural and building techniques. Nearby are beautifully decorated temples and street shrines. In recent years, however, these beautiful structures have been dominated by high concrete buildings.

The hotel has 48 rooms, all elegantly furnished in traditional style with simple, modern amenities (excluding televisions and lifts). The use of plastic has been carefully avoided and the general code of ethics for houseguests is to "conserve" rather than to "waste". There are small signs which hint at keeping the tap water closed, not to flush toilets too often, switch "off" lights when going out of rooms and encouraging guests to use cotton or paper bags for shopping. Guests are requested not to buy plastic mineral bottles but instead to fill reusable bottles with water provided by the hotel. None of these policies infringe on the level of quality guests receive from the staff at Kantipur Temple House Hotel.

Kantipur Temple House Hotel is an example to many entrepreneurs and property developers in Nepal that structure and decor can be artistically designed and built and be compatible with commercial success. A successful business venture need not destroy the cultural values and soul of a nation.
